Name In The Game
OTTAWA (AP) _ Ottawa Senators coach Rick Bowness wasn’t amused when 23-year-old Vicent Pun showed up for practice looking for a job.
″Let’s make something perfectly clear. If anybody else shows up like this, I’ll lock the doors,″ Bowness said after Monday’s workout. ″This isn’t senior hockey, this is the National Hockey League.″
Pun was shown the door after 10 minutes on the ice.
″I knew he didn’t know much about hockey because he was running the bleachers in his skates,″ Senators forward Mike Peluso said. ″If he’s never been on skates before, he’s doing pretty well.″
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Charlie Ward has rejoined Florida State’s basketball team after completing his first season as the football team’s starting quarterback.
Ward, who led the Seminoles to an 11-1 record and a No. 2 ranking, was still stiff from Friday night’s 27-14 victory over Nebraska in the Orange Bowl when he hit the court for the first time Monday.
″I’m sore,″ he said. ″I’m not going to go full blast right now but work on my game and try and improve it.″
Florida State coach Pat Kennedy said Ward would accompany the team to Virginia for Wednesday night’s game, but probably wouldn’t play until Saturday night at Wake Forest.
″He knows we’d like him back as soon as possible,″ said Kennedy, who hopes Ward will be ready to see extended action when the Seminoles face Maryland at home Jan. 13. ″Maybe by that time he’ll be cranked up pretty well.″
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - Alabama ticket manager Tommy Ford is losing his hair over the Crimson’s Tide’s national football championship.
Ford was going in for a crew cut today, the result of a remark made last summer to Alabama linebacker coach Jeff Rouzie.
″I told him it sure would be great to win the national championship in the centennial year,″ Ford said Monday. ″Then I told him if we did, I’d get a crew cut like his. I’ve been reminded of that since then, and I’m going through with the deal.″
