Maryland Zoo says baby giraffe will be named ‘Willow’
BALTIMORE (AP) — The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore has given its baby giraffe a name: “Willow.”
The female reticulated giraffe calf was born Feb. 6 to 4-year-old Juma and 11-year-old Caesar. It was the first birth of a giraffe at the zoo in more than 20 years.
The zoo announced the giraffe’s name Thursday after conducting an online vote on the zoo’s website.
In addition to “Willow” the zoo gave the public five other options including “Opal” and “Ruby.” The public was also asked to consider “Dottie,” because the calf has a spot in the shape of a dot above each hoof. “Safara,” a name of African origin that means fire, and “Imara,” which means strong in Swahili, were also contenders.
