Committee reviewing campus building names to meet next week
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) — Marshall University says a presidential committee looking into building names on campus will meet next week.
School officials say the committee will have a public information session on Nov. 28. The meeting is set for at 5:30 p.m. in Room BE-5 of the Memorial Student Center on the Huntington campus.
Marshall President Jerome A. Gilbert formed the committee in April in response to a student’s inquiry about the 1937 naming of the university’s Jenkins Hall for a Confederate Civil War general.
Gilbert appointed 12 committee members to represent students, faculty, staff and the university’s Board of Governors. The group is to examine the names of all buildings on campus. It will prepare a report and recommendations for Gilbert.
Next week’s meeting will include information about Gen. Albert Gallatin Jenkins and the naming of Jenkins Hall.
