Webb Extends Lead in Evian Masters
EVIAN, France (AP) _ Karrie Webb rallied after three bogeys in the first six holes and extended her lead to two shots in Thursday’s second round of the $1.8 million Evian Masters.
Webb shot a 3-under 69 over the 6,091-yard Royal Evian Club course for a 36-hole total of 9-under 135.
Sophie Gustafson had a 68 and was second at 137, one stroke ahead of Annika Sorenstam, who also shot a 68.
``I had a bad start,″ Webb said. ``I was getting agitated, but I managed to get it back and grind it out.
``There were a few concentration errors.″
She reeled off birdies from seven through nine, bogeyed the 10th, then covered the final six holes in four under.
At the par-4, 13th, she hit a 9-iron 127 yards and the ball ran into the hole for an eagle. At the 14th, Webb drained a 22-foot birdie putt, and at the par-5 18th she wedged to 15 feet and sank her fifth birdie of the day.
Gustafson went out in 31, holing three birdies and pitching in for eagle at the par-4 fifth, but she had two bogeys and only one birdie over the back nine.
Sorenstam moved into the lead group with an eagle at 18. From 174 yards over a creek, Sorenstam hit a 4-iron that rolled within nine feet of the cup. She then sank the putt.
Kelly Robbins had a 70 for fourth place at 139. Meg Mallon shot a 70 and Sherri Steinhauer 72 to share fifth at 140 with Italy’s Silvia Cavalleri (70) and Sweden’s Carin Koch (71).
