French FM says they’ll try again on Syria referral to ICC
UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The French foreign minister says his country will try again to get the divided U.N. Security Council to refer the situation in Syria to the International Criminal Court, saying, “obviously it’s not easy, but we have to try.”
Laurent Fabius spoke to reporters Friday at U.N. headquarters before planning to leave for the Iran nuclear talks in Switzerland.
A Security Council effort last year to refer Syria’s solution to the ICC failed because of a veto by Syria’s ally Russia, supported by China.
Fabius says he doesn’t know whether Russia will be willing to think differently now.
The rise of the Islamic State group in Syria’s north and east over the past year has some diplomats expressing hope that the threat will affect Russia’s approach to the conflict.
