Christians Launch $21M Campaign

WASHINGTON (AP) _ A fund-raising and voter turnout drive begun Thursday by the Christian Coalition is seeking monthly donations from church members throughout the country to help meet its $21 million goal.

The ``21 Victory″ campaign is intended to recruit and train more than a million activists who, in turn, will encourage conservatives to vote in the 2000 elections. The campaign also will make the Christian Coalition’s voter guide available on the Internet.

Randy Tate, the group’s executive director, called the grassroots effort ``a combination of old-fashioned shoe leather and handbills, coupled with high-tech technology.″

Coalition President Pat Robertson said the drive, and the easier access of voter guides, is aimed at getting a record turnout among religious conservative voters.

``This isn’t some radical extreme; it’s straight down the middle of what the American people would like to see,″ he said. ``All we want to do is facilitate their knowledge of the issues and facilitate their citizenship involvement.″

About a half-million letters were mailed this week to church members, asking each to donate about $20 a month for the next 21 months, Robertson said.

Americans United for Separation of Church and State criticized the campaign as part of an ``annual publicity stunt that promises much, much more than (the group) can deliver.″
