Scotts, up 3 5/8 at 37 1/4

Monsanto plans to sell its home lawn-and-garden business, minus its popular Roundup herbicide products, to The Scotts Co. for $300 million.

Capstead Mortgage, down 3 3/4 at 9 3/16

The Dallas-based company said that costs associated with a repositioning of its mortgage securities portfolio will produce losses of $255 million and cut earnings by $45 million.

Caribiner International, down 5 1/4 at 17 1/4

Caribiner, a corporate meeting and event planner, expects its fiscal third-quarter earnings to fall below analysts' expectations.

Pier 1 Imports, up 1 1/16 at 23

The Fort Worth, Texas-based home furnishings retailer will split its stock 3-for-2 and increase its quarterly dividend 12.5 percent, on a post-split basis. Also, the company's chief executive officer, Clark Johnson, 67, said he is retiring. He will be succeeded by the company's chief operating officer, Marvin Girouard, who is 58.


Cholestech, down 4 3/4 at 7

The Hayward, Calif.-based company said it expects its first-quarter earnings to fall below expectations.

Danka Business Systems, down 3 7/16 at 13 9/16

Danka expects revenue for its first quarter to be about 10 percent below market expectations. London-based Danka is an independent supplier of office equipment and related services, parts and supplies.

Smithway Motor Xpress, down 3 3/4 at 12

The Fort Dodge, Iowa-based truckload carrier expects its second-quarter results to fall below expectations. Smithway attributed the earnings decline to health insurance costs, a shortage of qualified drivers and maintenance expenses.
