SALT LAKE CITY (AP) _ Stephon Marbury scored 33 points and sparked an overtime run that led the Phoenix Suns past the Utah Jazz 111-104 Monday night.
Marbury and Rodney Rogers hit 3-pointers in a 9-1 burst in the first 3:43 of overtime. Phoenix missed five free throws in the extra period, but held Utah to 2-of-10 shooting.
Shawn Marion had 15 points and Anfernee Hardaway and Tony Delk each added 14 for the Suns.
Karl Malone, who played the final 36 minutes of the game, paced Utah with 27 points but shot 10-of-28.
Donyell Marshall had 23 points and 15 rebounds for the Jazz, who have yet to win consecutive games this season and are off to the worst start in 18 years at 5-9.
Trailing 93-89, the Suns scored six straight points, ending with Marion’s jumper with 2:17 left for a 95-93 lead.
Utah took a 98-95 edge with 1:25 to play on Marshall’s 3-pointer, but Malone shot three air balls in the last minute and the Jazz didn’t score again in regulation.
Marbury made a pair of free throws with 22 seconds left to send the game to overtime.
Hardaway’s 3-pointer and layup capped a 10-0 surge that put the Suns ahead 48-27. Behind Jarron Collins’ seven points, Utah cut the lead to 62-50 at halftime.
Notes: The Suns made seven 3-pointers while Utah hit only one in the first half. ... Malone passed Sam Perkins in career games played with 1,287, seventh on the NBA’s all-time list. ...
