HOUSTON (AP) _ Academy Award-winning actor Tommy Lee Jones was airlifted to a Houston hospital Friday after he was injured in a polo accident, authorities said.

Hermann Hospital spokeswoman Inocencia Castillo said Jones, 52, was being treated in the emergency room, but she would not discuss his injuries or condition.

Houston TV station KHOU reported that Jones was in stable condition with a spinal injury.

The accident occurred about 3 p.m. at the Estancia Del Pueblo Viego, a private polo ranch about 45 miles west of Houston in Sealy, said Austin County sheriff's deputy Richard Holloman.

Authorities received an emergency call from the ranch saying Jones had either been thrown from a horse or fell off during a polo match.

``All we know is they had a private ambulance out there and they contacted Lifeflight and they came out and picked him up and took him to Houston,'' Holloman said.

Ms. Castillo said a news conference on Jones' condition was tentatively set for Friday afternoon.

Jones, who won an Academy Award for best supporting actor for his role in ``The Fugitive,'' was born in San Saba. A biography of the actor says he raises cattle and polo horses in addition to his film work. He has 30 films to his credit, including ``Men in Black,'' ``US Marshals,'' ``Cobb,'' and ``JFK.''
