Boesel Replaces Tracy for Starter
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Raul Boesel, whose full-time ride is in the Indy Racing League, has been signed to replace Paul Tracy in the season-opening race for the rival CART series.
Tracy was suspended from the March 21 opener at Homestead, Fla., by CART following a rough drive during the race in Australia last October.
The race will represent a homecoming of sorts for Boesel, who drove for Team Green in 1996 and finished 22nd in the CART championship.
``While we’re extremely disappointed Paul won’t be driving for us at Homestead, we’re fortunate to have a driver of Raul’s talent and experience available,″ said Barry Green, owner of Team KOOL Green. ``He’s very well liked by everyone on the team. Through no fault of Raul, we didn’t have the best of seasons together in 1996, so we’re looking forward to giving him a competitive and reliable package.″
The Brazilian driver will be teamed for the first time with Scotsman Dario Franchitti, the other Team Green driver.
``Raul’s a perfect choice,″ said Tracy, who has signed a three-year contract extension despite a disappointing and sometimes frustrating first year with Team Green. ``He’s a great all around driver, but some of his best performances have come on ovals.
``Given his experience with the team, he should go well at Homestead.″
Boesel, a former world sports car driving champion who also has run 169 CART races, is scheduled to test at Homestead from Monday through Wednesday.
Tracy is scheduled to be back in the seat of the Reynard-Honda for the second event of the 20-race season, April 10 in Japan.
