CHITRAL, Pakistan (AP) _ A Tajik woman who fled civil war in her homeland gave birth in a squalid jail hospital after being imprisoned for illegally entering Pakistan, officials said Wednesday.

The woman, identified only as Nagina, and her husband crossed the snow- clogged Wakhan corridor that separates Pakistan and Tajikistan, said Muzzam Khan, a leader in Chitral, a mountain village 180 miles northwest of Islamabad.

Pakistani border police imprisoned the couple as illegal aliens. Their son was born Tuesday.

''We walked all the way from Tajikistan to Pakistan in the hope that we would reach our destination in Turkey, but instead we have landed in jail,'' said Nagina's husband, Vitali, who would not disclose their last name.

Hundreds of people have been killed or wounded in nearly six months of civil war in Tajikistan, a former Soviet republic.
