Cart Smarts: Put healthy snacks in your Super Bowl game plan
Super Bowl Sunday is this coming weekend, and for many, more important than watching the big game are the snacks we will consume.
Whether you are watching the game from the comfort of your couch, at a local bar or someone else’s home, there is temptation everywhere, and many of us will be reaching for the snacks throughout the big game.
Here are a few healthy ways to snack down on game day without the guilt.
• Formulate a healthy eating game plan in advance. If you are hosting a party, make sure to provide many nutritious choices, which might include fresh vegetables, fresh fruit, turkey chili, vegetable bean chips and salsa, hummus or a thin crust pizza. If you are going to someone else’s home to view the game, you might offer to bring a few sensible dishes so you can control your own menu.
• Practice portion control. Familiarize yourself with proper portions ahead of time so you will recognize a serving size when you are facing off against your favorite football snacks.
• It is a good idea in general to limit dressings and dips. Dressings and dips can contain several grams of fat or sugar per serving, which also leads to added calories. Enjoy your healthy snack with some dip but strive to enjoy in moderation.
• Do not stress eat. Try not to let the opposing team’s plays derail your efforts to eat healthy! Instead of reaching for the chips when your team is behind, reach for crunchy vegetables instead.
