COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYOFF RANKINGS
Michigan moves to No. 4 in playoff rankings
UNDATED (AP) — Michigan has moved into the fourth spot of the College Football Playoff rankings, behind Alabama, Clemson and Notre Dame. Georgia is next at five, followed by Oklahoma.
The playoff picture cleared up after a weekend where several contenders asserted themselves. The top-four teams in the final rankings Dec. 2 will play in the national semifinals.
The Crimson Tide easily dispatched LSU from the top four, beating the Tigers 29-0. LSU, though, only dropped to No. 7 after its second loss, ahead of Washington State, West Virginia and Ohio State — all with only one loss.
Unbeaten Notre Dame moved up one spot to No. 3, and Michigan jumped a spot after a 42-7 victory against Penn State.
With four weeks left in the season, nine of the top 10 teams are serious contenders. LSU is basically out, because the Tigers have no chance to win a conference title.
Falcons sign veteran defensive end Bruce Irvin
FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. (AP) — The Atlanta Falcons have signed defensive end Bruce Irvin to a one-year deal, reuniting the veteran with coach Dan Quinn.
Irvin, who was cut by the Oakland Raiders on Saturday, became a free agent after clearing waivers on Tuesday with $3.8 million remaining on his contract. The Falcons, who play at Cleveland on Sunday, did not release terms of the deal announced Wednesday.
Irvin played played four seasons with Seattle, two of them when Quinn was defensive coordinator. He joined the Raiders in 2016.
The 31-year-old Atlanta native has 40 sacks in his career and 15 forced fumbles.
Kevin Harvick stripped of berth in NASCAR title race
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Kevin Harvick has been stripped of his berth in NASCAR’s championship race because his winning car failed inspection after Texas Motor Speedway.
NASCAR says the discovery, made after Harvick’s win, negates the automatic berth he earned into the finale. The No. 4 had an illegal spoiler.
The rule in question states that spoilers must be used exactly as supplied from the manufacturer and not altered. The infraction was discovered when NASCAR gave the car a further inspection in North Carolina.
Harvick won Sunday’s race to join Joey Logano as drivers locked into next weekend’s championship race at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Now, three spots will be up for grabs this Sunday in Phoenix.
WORLD CUP-FOILED ATTACKS
Russia says it thwarted drone attacks at World Cup
MOSCOW (AP) — Russia says it thwarted attempted drone attacks at this year’s World Cup.
The head of Russia’s Federal Security Service, Alexander Bortnikov, says his officers “took measures to detect and foil attempts by terrorists to use drones during the preparation and hosting of various major political and sports events, most of all during the soccer World Cup.” He gave no further details in comments reported by the Tass state news agency.
Russia used thousands of police and cutting-edge surveillance technology to guard the World Cup. However, four Pussy Riot protesters managed to run onto the field during the final.
In April, Russia said “extremists” and nationalist soccer hooligans had planned to attack World Cup events in the city of Samara but were foiled.
