Rain Delays DFS Classic Tennis

June 9, 1998

BIRMINGHAM, England (AP) _ Rain disrupted the DFS Classic for the second straight day Tuesday, but Steffi Graf did manage to get in some practice for her latest comeback.

Graf, who has played in only two tournaments since knee surgery last year, is anxious to get in as much match play as possible before Wimbledon.

The top-seeded Graf is scheduled to play Australian qualifier Rennae Stubbs in a second-round match Wednesday.

Stubbs, who is coming back from eight months out with a wrist injury, said she would be nervous.

``It’ll be a big occasion and there will be a lot of interest in Steffi coming back _ but I hope we’ll have some fun,″ Stubbs said after beating Shi-Ting Wang of Chinese Taipei in a first- round match Tuesday.

Laura Golarsa of Italy won the first completed match of the grass-court tournament.

After four hours of rain-caused delay and interruption, Golarsa beat Denisa Chladkova of the Czech Republic 6-3, 7-5.
