Figueroa, Sanchez Agree to Pirates Deals
PITTSBURGH (AP) _ Right-handers Nelson Figueroa and Duaner Sanchez agreed to one-year contracts Wednesday with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Figueroa was 2-1 with a 3.31 ERA in three starts and nine relief appearances games with Pittsburgh last season, including three starts. He was one of the top pitchers in the Triple-A Pacific Coast League, going 12-5 with a 2.97 ERA in 23 starts at Nashville.
Sanchez is a hard-throwing reliever acquired from Arizona for reliever Mike Fetters in 2002. He had a 1-0 record and 16.50 ERA in six Pirates appearances, giving up 15 hits and 11 earned runs in six innings. He was 4-4 with a 3.69 ERA at Nashville.
Both got split contracts. Figueroa gets paid at an annual rate of $375,000 in the majors and $151,000 in the minors. Sanchez gets paid at a rate of $305,000 in the majors and $105,000 in the minors.
