Searchers find wreckage of floatplane missing out of Sitka

JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — A floatplane missing out of Sitka has been found crashed with one confirmed fatality.

Anchorage television station KTUU reports a Coast Guard helicopter crew found the downed airplane late Sunday night in the Katlian River.

The river flows into Katlian Bay north of Sitka.

Coast Guard spokeswoman Charly Hengen says one person was found dead inside and a second person on board is missing.

The identities of the people on board have not been released.

The white and red PA-18 Super Cub float plane on Saturday night left Sitka for what was supposed to be a 20-minute flight over Katlian Bay and Olga Strait.

The Coast Guard searched by air and water Sunday.
